Engraving is the process of cutting or incising a design into a hard, flat surface, usually a metal, with a pointed tool known as a graver. In its broadest meaning, engraving can be described as the art of cutting lines in wood, metal either for replication through printing or for decoration. In its narrowest sense, engraving is an intaglio printing method in which the lines are incised in a metal plate with a burin or a graver.

Torchmate CNC cutting systems are sold either as a kit, or in finished "bolt-together" form. We have both routing/drilling models for wood and plastic, and plasma cutting models for metal. Our optional automated Z axis upgrade includes physical third axis and BobCAD 3-D software, permitting hogging operations, raised 3-D images, and full 3-D contouring capability.

The following example shows how to do raised lettering.
Step 1: Draw letters in CorelDraw or any other drawing or CAD program that will export dxf files. Use the font of your choice, and turn fill off, so the lettering will be an outline.
Step 2: Open the dxf file containing the lettering in the BobCAD 3D software program included with automated Z axis. Perform pocketing operation, which creates a tool path as shown at right. You have full control over bit diameter, tool offset, depth, overlap, etc. BobCAD now creates the G-code file for the raised lettering.
Step 3: The Torchmate driver software now loads the G-code file, and cuts the lettering. The whole operation takes perhaps fifteen minutes, most of which is the cutting process.
